Silence in Eighteenth Century Arts, History, and Philosophy examines eighteenth-century silence—understood here in its broadest epistemological and hermeneutic sense—by exploring its various forms, representations, and modalities. The contributors analyse a wide range of texts—from painting and aesthetic treatises to poetry and clandestine literature—probing the many ways the unspoken and the unsaid are expressed through diverse artistic and cultural forms.
Originating from the Seminar for Early Career Researchers organized by the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies at the University of Tuscia (Viterbo) in September 2018, the volume reveals how discourses on silence—spanning themes such as anonymity to meditation, typographic and linguistic markers to silent reading, censorship to the spaces of silence—were deeply embedded in the society, arts, and culture of the Enlightenment.
Le silence dans les arts, l’histoire et la philosophie du XVIIIe siècle traite des formes,
